I was searching for some article directories, pligg sites, social bookmarking sites and directories. I wanted to submit my sites, to see if something happens. Well… nothing. I mean not much. I managed to put together a link of over 19.000 directory sites. Yeah, that is the correct number. I knew there was a few duplicates so I made a clean up, and ended up with a list of 14.000 directory sites. Woow, I was like, ok, if I submit to all of these, there will be a bunch of backlinks to my sites, I am gonna be the best…:D I was wrong… I still had a lot to clean up from this huge list. Because the sheer amount of the directories, I first imported the list to a working server, where I had installed a wordpress plugin called “backlinks checker”. I set it up in a way that all dead links to be removed. The server was working for a few days, checked the dead sites, and I finnaly ended up with a nice list of 9000 directories.
It was still to much, but I had to check these with hand. So I generated a list and started to check the sites one by one. I took over two weeks, until I managed to delete all the “live, but parked” sites. These were not reported by the dead link checker, they were not dead… just something else. The final list was less than 2000 working directories. A few directories from this list still need to be dropped. They are accepting only paid submissons, so no point of waiting my and their time with the submit.
What is my point exactly here? Don’t fall for this “too good to be true” lists. They are not that good as presented. What happens is that most of the webmasters are lazy folks, and they won’t even bother to check the validity of this lists. You will see a bunch of forums with a lot of members saying that the list is magnificent, perfect, woow… but you can safely bet: to make a good list for yourself you need to put a lot of work to it.
But of course if you have no idea where to start, you can start by getting a list (whatever is that list about) and CHECK IT, correct it, add your stuff. Work with it and it will pay of one day.
