“With USB 2.0 interface and plug and play. 64GB large capacity enables you to store whatever useful information you want. “ Oh yeah!! It is a little bit expensive for me right now, $192.26 at focalprice with free shipping but I am not in a rush of getting one. Well… I would like to have a 64gb flash card, but right now I am happy with the 8 gb one I have…

There is always a catch…

It is annoying that there are “cupon codes” “promo prices” and when you really check the deal, there is always a catch… “30% off on all orders*” with that little star, and somewhere hidden on the bottom of the page “every purchase over $100” Obviously, when I want to spend let’s say only 10 in that store, I am not going to get something for an extra $90, just to get that 30% discount. And so many time people are getting fooled with this!

One time I went to a store, and there was some products with “extra discount” Now I knew the price BEFORE the discount was added, because I wanted to get it a week ago, but I considered it a bit overpriced so I give up on it. And after a week, I was happy to see it on sale. There was 3 prices attached to the product, and 3 of them were “removed”. I was like OMG this must be really cheap, if it suffered 3x discounts. And guess what. I checked the bar codes with a price checker, and it was EXACTLY the same price as a week before.

Today I wanted to get a domain name for one new project. I was supposed to get it with $1 cupon from godaddy. And well… I didn’t managed to get it, because there is always a little * that messes up everything.

Gotta love automation

I just realized how much my life is easier these days. I have set up a few websites in such a way, that they send me the database backup file to my email address. And this was just the beginning.  After this I set up the email program, so now the backups are put in a separate folder. My only thing I need to do is delete the old database files from time to time. I figured I will be just fine with 2 sets of backups.

No internet access but connected

Did I said already that I hate computers? Sure I did, maybe not in the blog. But every day life I said it plenty of times. They are full of unexpected “surprises” and happenings, that have nothing to do with anything.

This was what happened this time. We shut down the computers, 2 in the same room, same internet connection and went away for a few days. 100% nobody touched the computers while we was away, and when I started my computer it worked, when my boyfriend started his computer the internet was off. First we was thinking that somehow the network cable was faulty, than we suspected the network card, the network card driver, but none of the above was bad! We actually changed the network card, but same thing was happening with the new card to: the network was working fine, we could access the shared folders on each others computers but he wasn’t able to connect to the internet. Checked every setting, ip, DNS, everything was set up correctly, network was connected but internet still off.

So we went to search for solution on the net, hoping that somebody else already had the same issue, before starting to install windows again. We found the solution here.

We found the:

“How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista”

page on Microsoft support, and learned that “These issues may occur if the Winsock registry keys are damaged or corrupted.” Owkay, as the last try before a fresh install, we downloaded the Microsoft Fix It tool, started the program, rebooted the system and tadam….the computer was connected to the internet again! So indeed this Fix it worked, and fixed the Winsock2 corruption.

This is STUPID

Seriously…

I went to my old forgotten hotmail account. I needed to send a mail to a friend. And guess what! I was asked to enter some almost invisible captchas. Of course this is “to avoid spam”. But hey folks over there, you who use captcha to protect yourself I really understand your issues, but for the sake of the matters use some soft to generate the captcha that IS READABLE by HUMAN eyes. Because I don’t mind the few seconds to enter the captcha, but I do mind the minutes that I was needed to figure out what the hell is written over there.

I see this “encrypted” capchas more and more over the time. When I learned programming, there was a line bolded in the books: “MAKE IT USER FRIENDLY”

Apparently the Indian outsourced programmers don’t have it in their manual anymore. :(

Email filters

I am using email programs for quite a while.  I used Outlook Express for very long time, then came other small programs and for a while I am using TheBat. It is a nifty little email program, but apparently I am starting to get old, because it took me a while to get used to it.

Not so long ago I discovered the magic of filters. They help me with my job very much.

For example I have set up some automatic database backups for websites. I receive the backup zip in the mail, and I want to keep at least 2 copies of this. The most recent and a previous one. But for do this efficiently I needed a way to sort the emails. With filters this is automatic now. I set up The Bat to put the incoming mail with the specific title “database backup” in a separate folder. This way it is very easy to keep track of how many backups exist, to see if there is a big difference in size of the database (that means there is something wrong). And also this help me to keep my email folder’s size pretty normal, because I can delete the unneeded backup files.

Protect your WordPress blog from web injection

I was looking for some cron job related tutorials, and I came accross this article:

How to protect your WordPress blog from web injection

Some very good point out there about the plugins and themes causing the most vulnerabilities for wordpress.  The very first thing to do, if you want to protect your wordpress I already mentioned: use the themes and plugins only from trustable sources, and always check the code for encrypted stuff. If it is encrypted you have no idea what is there. And the “we need to protect ourself for not getting our back link deleted” it’s just a lame explanation. Because I am pretty sure, a big percentage of normal people won’t delete that backlink if you ask them nicely. Those who delete, will delete it anyway.

There are some cases where companies protect their scripts this way, and if you trust the company, than of course there is no problem with the encrypted code. But when it comes to “FREE” in many many cases it’s proven, that they have a Price. And usually bigger that you would like to pay for it.

So back to the article. There are tips on how to protect your wordpress blog from web injection like:

  • don’t allow write permission to scripts unless is really necessary
  • use only trustable plugins and themes

there are some solutions for better protection too with some plugins:

1. WordPress Firewall Plugin
2. WordPress Antivirus Plugin
3. Secure WordPress Plugin
4. Wp-Malwatch Plugin

So yet again something to be tested and see how it works.

The new Firefox

Yesterday I  mentioned that I need to say goodbye to the old version of firefox. What I used was Firefox Portable, version 3.5.15.  I postponed the upgrade due to a theme, that is not any more available in version 3.6.12 I currently use.

The difference between the two versions regarding the memory usage is simply huge. I knew this for a while, but I really liked that pinkish theme, with the cute hello kitty faces instead of boring buttons, and simply because all my monitor turned unbelievably pink when I started it :D Some crazy and silly thing I know…

The new version only uses 1/4 of  memory that was used by the old version. While extended browsing, for a few hours, opening and closing tabs, sometimes forgetting to close it, the old versions memory usage jumped to 800mb, and there were times where it hit the 1.5gb of memory usage! I know, that time I had extremely lot tabs open. The most annoying thing with the old version was that even if I closed the tabs, the memory was cleared only if I closed the firefox, and from time to time I needed to start task manager and force to end task.

One major concern for me was moving my important data over to the new browser.  Especially the saved passwords was my main problem. These days, everywhere you need a user name and password, it is simply impossible to remember them all, maybe if you use the same username/password combination all over the place. But… that is not good either, and from time to time, the username is taken,so variables and more variables to keep in mind.  I saved the less sensitive passwords in firefox, and they were handy all the time when needed. But when I need to move to a new browser… brrr don’t even want to think about searching through a bunch of old mails for getting access to here and there.

I had installed  the Password Exporter firefox addon , from the old version, saved the xml file, and installed the same plugin to the new version where I made an import of the xml file. It went like a charm, got all my passwords to the new FF in no time.  I imported the saved bookmarks.html, and added a few more addons. That was it!

Oh wait :D the first thing I did is I added a pink Hello Kitty personas to my firefox, to somehow cute up a little bit :D
